This year our outreach event will be held in collaboration with the University of Houston Downtown SWE Collegiate Chapter. Our goal is to introduce engineering design to 200 middle school and early high school girls by having them design, manufacture and test physical objects they create to learn that engineering is in their world everyday.

Program Details:

Parking, Drop-Off, and Pick-Up Information
  • Address: 151 Girard Street, Houston, Texas, 77001.
  • Parking: At Visitor’s Garage or across the street.
  • If you or your student/child is handicap please send me an email (trodriguez@transystems.com) and we will arrange alternative parking/drop-off.
  • Volunteers will be at the garage and drop-off location to walk/guide people to the Welcome Center for Registration Check-In.
  • We will send out updates if plans change.
  • Additional details regarding parking to come.
Check-In/Registration8:30-9:00am
  • Time: Registration will be open from 8:30-9:00am
  • Registration Check-In/Opening/Closing Ceremony: at Welcome Center
  • Attendees will receive their program packet, T-Shirt and team assignment.
  • Parent Educator Program (PEP) Attendees will split up from students to their own SWENext PEP program.  Learning Objectives for PEP:
    • Learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission and resources
    • Network with SWE members as well as other parents and educators
    • Participate in a panel discussion with select SWE members and outreach experts
    • Complete a hands-on activity and learn best practices for doing engineering with girls

SWENext Clubs

SWENext Clubs

SWENexters Clubs are a way to connect with SWE members and other SWENexters in your area. It’s a fun opportunity to bring our SWENexters and other students together in person to get excited and learn more about STEM!

  • Students of all age and genders are welcome and genders are welcome and clubs can be formed from school groups, local friends, already established clubs and more.
  • Your SWENext club can be any size with students in K-12 grades.
  • You can work on projects that use engineering to help people in your community or compete in a competition like Future City Competition or FIRST Robotics Competition.
  • Your club can be all about engineering outreach for younger students.
  • The direction of your club is up to you!

Parent/Educator Program

Raise a STEM Girl 

Parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, administrators and leaders are encouraged to participate in the Parent Educator Program (PEP). The program will highlight innovative education tactics to teach girls STEM and keep them engaged. You will hear from speakers about the psychology, peer pressure, and ways to help your daughter and/or student see the creative and rewarding side to STEM. Program Elements:

  • Learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission and resources
  • Network with SWE members as well as other parents and educators
  • Participate in a panel discussion with select SWE members and outreach experts
  • Complete a hands-on activity and learn best practices for engineering projects with girls
  • Have lunch with the SWE engineers (lunch provided)
  • Join the girls at the end of the day for show and tell

    • 7th, 8th and 9th grade female students
  • Is there a cost?
    • No this is a free event!
  • Is there an enrollment limit?
    • Yes, first come first serve.
  • Who will teach the courses? 
    • Professional Engineering Women from SWE
    • Engineering Students from University of Houston Downtown, University of Houston and Rice
    • Guest Speakers
  • English is not my daughter’s first language. Will that be a problem?
    • Not at all, we will have volunteers that are bilingual.
    • Please indicate the first language on the registration form.
  • Will the girls make anything to take home?
    • Yes! Everyone will take something home.
  • Are teacher recommendations needed?
    • No, all you need is a desire to explore and create!
  • Should we pack a lunch?
    • No, lunch will be provided free of charge.
  • Is a permission slip/waiver required?
    • Yes, a permission slip/waiver will be emailed to student prior to the event.
